Learn about birds and their habitats, food, nests, etc. while playing a competitive game. Wingspan is a card-driven, resource-building board game in which players compete to attract birds to their wildlife reserves. Players spend food resources to add birds, which are represented by 170 individually illustrated cards, to the forest, prairie, and wetland habitats on their player boards. From the early 1950s through the 1980s, a group of twenty-six African American artists known as the Florida Highwaymen used vivid, vibrant colors to capture scenes of Florida's natural beauty. Excluded from galleries and museums during the Jim Crow era, they sold their work along U.S. Highway 1, building a powerful legacy of resilience and artistry. We are pleased to invite you to meet a Florida Highwaymen legacy artist for a special, one-afternoon-only exhibition of their stunning work. The featured artist will be in attendance, with artwork available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Big Waters Land Trust. Please note that cash or check are preferred, as credit cards may not be accepted. This is a free, drop-in event from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. We kindly ask that you register if you plan to attend. Additional details will be shared via email as the event approaches. Join us to meet featured legacy artist Roy 'R.A.' One of the few second-generation Highwaymen artists, McLendon began painting at a young age and was creating and selling work alongside established artists by his teenage years. His early exposure to the group's techniques and lifestyle shaped his lifelong artistic journey. McLendon is known for his vivid oil paintings of Florida landscapes, moonlit rivers, and coastal scenes, often inspired by his childhood memories of Old Florida. His work has contributed to the recognition of Highwaymen art as fine art. In addition to his artistic career, he holds a doctorate in theology, served as a pastor in Vero Beach for 17 years, and remains active in music and community outreach with his family. This workshop is a hands-on introduction to an easy method of mushroom cultivation. We'll spend the first hour inside covering the basics. We will take a snack and tea break and then we'll head outside to inoculate oak logs with pink oyster spawn. Benjamin Dimmitt, conservation photographer will discuss his recent book on Florida's vanishing wetlands  An Unflinching Look: Elegy for Wetlands a deep, peer-reviewed examination of the impact of climate change on the wetlands at the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge on Florida's Gulf Coast, 70 miles north of Tampa.

This year's tournament moves to the esteemed Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club—a premier Par-71 private course offering players an elevated experience. Join Big Waters Land Trust for the opening reception of our third annual Community Art Show! This juried art exhibit focuses on paintings and drawings and showcases local protected lands through the eyes of our conservation community. All art selected for inclusion was chosen by our esteemed jury without artist names attached. Jurors include artist Alicia Brown, Jamaican contemporary realist painter, renowned for her captivating work that seamlessly blends skillful technique with profound story telling; Jen Kroeger, a multi-disciplinary artist, using paint, mixed media, and textiles, she creates vibrant, uplifting abstracts that reflect her love of bold color and natural surroundings; and Christa Molinaro, the Director of Exhibitions at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design, bringing over twenty years of experience in the museum field.
